A study published in the journal Cancer Letters in July 2014 (i ) found that a compound found in cucumber inhibited prostate cancer growth in mice. In this study, the compound reduced the rate of tumor formation, and also reduced the size of tumors by 79%. It was able to do this by inhibiting ACLY, an enzyme used by cancer. In another study published in the journal PLoS One, the compound studied, Cucurbitacin B (CuB), was found to inhibit breast cancer along the BRCA1 cancer cell line. (ii) The same compound was also found to inhibit breast cancer in vivo and in vitro in mice in a study done by the Japanese Cancer Association and published in July 2008 by the journal Cancer Science. (iii)
The same compound found in cucumbers, Cucurbitacin B (CuB), was also found to suppress pancreatic cancer cells in mice in a study published by the American Journal of Cancer Research in July 2009. (iv)
A fun and delicious way to eat cucumbers is in a salad, diced and peeled, with fresh chopped cilantro and lemon juice.
